General Statement of Duties
The primary purpose of this position is to assist the general public in obtaining services, records and information provided by the Buncombe County Department of Health and to provide division personnel with administrative office support and maintenance of records and databases (#1855)


Examples of Work
Responsible for receiving the general public, in person or by telephone, providing advice and information regarding departmental services, program procedures, referrals to appropriate departmental staff, and for receiving complaints applicable to the department.
Receives calls from other health center personnel regarding support service activities and responsibilities, and calls from environmental health staff seeking needed information in the field.
Responsible for all necessary office functions, which include maintaining paper records and files, communicating with field staff regarding daily work and preparing departmental reports, preparations for special mailings, power point presentation support, and other duties delegated by the director.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Ability to relate effectively to a variety of people including division staff, department staff and general public. Excellent public relations skills and ability to perform as a team member and act independently on primary duties. Knowledge of general office practices including organizational skills, typing, filing and written composition. Ability to understand related department organization and contacts. Ability to handle and understand a wide variety of tasks concurrently is necessary. Knowledge of computers and data entry skills are also required. Ability to efficiently and effectively interact with co-workers to accomplish common tasks. Ability to have efficient and courteous interaction with the customers. Perform quality work within deadlines with or without direct supervision. Interact professionally and courteously with other employees, customers and partners. Work effectively as a team contributor on all assignments. Understand the necessity to efficiently and effectively interact, communicate and coordinate work efforts with other employees and organizations in an effective manner to accomplish common task. Function in highly stressful circumstances. Maintain a high level of professionalism and to conduct business in an ethical manner at all times. Safely and successfully perform the essential job functions consistent with ADA and ADAAA, FMLA and other federal, state, and local standards, including meeting qualitative and/or quantitative productivity standards. Maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with ADA and ADAAA, FMLA and other federal state and local standards.


Minimum Education and Experience
Graduation from high school and demonstrated possession of knowledge, skills and abilities gained through at least two years of office assistant/secretarial experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
