Restaurants Cautioned About Scam
This news item expired on 6/30/2009, so the information below could be outdated or incorrect.
North Carolina environmental health officials are reminding restaurant owners and managers that they do not need to purchase hand washing posters.
“While North Carolina law does require hand washing signs with standard language to be posted in each employee’s bathrooms, the state will provide these signs at no charge to restaurants,” said Larry Michael, head of the Food Protection Branch in the Division of Environmental Health.
The reminder comes after a business called "The North Carolina Food Service Compliance Center" distributed letters to food service establishments that may mislead operators into believing they need to purchase hand washing posters at a cost of $19.95 plus shipping and handling.
Mr. Michael also said the proper hand washing signs can be found on the division’s web site, located at http://www.deh.enr.state.nc.us/ehs/forms.htm.
The Division of Environmental Health is an agency in the N.C. Department of Environment and Natural Resources.
