Buncombe County Sheriff's Office Continues to See Decrease in UCR Crimes

Buncombe County—The Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office continues to see decreases in Uniform Crime Reporting incidents. The Sheriff’s Office received its annual summary of 2017 Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) data from the State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) earlier this month. In 2007, the SBI reported that 3,619 UCR incidents were reported in Buncombe County; in 2017 the SBI reports that 1,977 UCR incidents were reported.

“Our community-directed approach to enforcement by utilizing our COPS teams, coupled with community partnerships and coalition-building have resulted in this reduction,” Sheriff Van Duncan stated. “Our officers have been empowered with the training to take ownership of the issues they encounter on calls for service, and have the skills necessary to resolve them. This is evident in reduction of crime that we have seen in our community, and the relationship this agency enjoys with the residents of Buncombe County."

The Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office participates in the SBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting Program, which provides an annual report of UCR offenses committed by county and municipality. Data for calendar year 2017, and for previous years, can be found online at Crime Reporting NC State Bureau of Investigation website.
