The Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office has received calls from residents reporting a scam by individuals instructing them to place funds on Green Dot cards in order to avoid arrest, or to pay tax debt. Remedying either situation cannot be done by placing funds on a Green Dot card.
Anyone who thinks that they have an outstanding warrant in Buncombe County can call the Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office or the Magistrate’s Office to obtain that information. The Internal Revenue Service will contact anyone directly, by mail if they have tax debt.
If you have been contacted by someone trying to solicit money using this scam, or have been a victim of this scam, call the Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office at (828) 250-6670 to file a report.
The Sheriff’s Office would like to remind the public not to provide social security number information, credit card information, or information regarding bank accounts to unknown persons soliciting that information over the phone or online.
