Volunteer

BCPL appreciates our volunteers. Our three main types of volunteers are:

Friends of the Library Volunteers

The Friends generally use volunteers to prepare for book sales, provide refreshments for author receptions, and to fundraise for specific branches.

Library Advisory Board

The Library Advisory Board supervises the Public Library System in Buncombe County.

Friends of the Library

The Friends are a source of volunteers and are visible supporters of the library's mission.

The Friends of Buncombe County Libraries, Inc. assist the public libraries in making the community aware of its services and its needs. Furthermore, they supplement the majority of funding for adult’s and children’s programming. They also purchase furniture and equipment that is not available through county funds.

The major Friends fundraisers are used book sales at every branch library. In addition, the Friends have a used book store called “Bookends” at Pack Memorial Library in downtown Asheville. Bookends is open during library hours and has previously enjoyed books, movies and music for all ages.

Membership

Friends memberships vary by library. You can become a member of the Friends at any branch library.  Memberships go directly to the library where you join, so your donation will stay in your community. Your support will help provide library services, materials and programming for library users of all ages.

The Friends of Buncombe County Libraries, Inc. is a registered 501(c)3 organization and all donations are tax deductible.

Volunteers

Volunteers are typically recruited through Friends of the Library organizations. Volunteers offer valuable behind-the-scenes work on special projects, such as preparations for book sales, providing refreshments for author receptions, offering transportation for guest speakers, etc. Get involved with your local Friends group and volunteer!

Donations

Donate Books & Monetary Gifts to Buncombe County Public Libraries.

Donate Books

The Friends of the Library happily accept donations of money, books or time.Donations of books are accepted at all libraries when we have available storage space. Contact your local branch to ask if they are currently accepting donations before bringing items to the library. Once donated, items become property of the Library and if they are not added to the collection they may be sold at a Friends of the Library Book Sale.

All the money raised from the Friends sale goes to the library to purchase new books and materials.

You can drop your books off at any library and get a tax receipt if you need one. For a list of all Friends of the Library book sales, check the library events calendar.

In some cases, Friends of the Library volunteers may be available to help pick up large donations. To ask for a pick up, please contact us.

No encyclopedia, text book, or magazine donations please.
