Buncombe County will be celebrated the grand opening of the The Bob Lewis Sports Park in Enka on July 20 by hosting a tournament featuring 49 teams from all over the southeast.

“We are celebrating the grand opening of the Enka ballfields; these seven great fields are going to be used for next three days with thousands of people visiting and celebrating with us,” notes Commissioner Joe Belcher, who was there on behalf of the Buncombe County Board of Commissioners. “This is the result of years of work, many partners, and community input. We are so excited that today has finally come, we are looking forward to many days like this over the next serval years.”

The tournament was a great opportunity for young athletes to showcase their skills as 48 college coaches were in attendance looking to recruit for various colleges. The event was the first major Women’s High School Softball Tournament to be held in North Carolina. And there’s no better fit than Enka; with its rich softball history and tradition of the Enka High Sugar Jets have won two recent 3-A state championships, going undefeated in 2015.

“What they have established here is unbelievable. With my experience in the past with my daughter playing travel ball, we travel to over 80 different fields in the south east during her little career of playing youth ball. And we have never seen anything like this,” says Commissioner Robert Pressley, noting the facility will not only expand local athletic opportunities but also have long-term economic impact for the County.

The sports park is located at 3 Walk Off Way in Asheville and features three baseball fields, four softball fields, concessions, and parking. For more great event happening at Bob Lewis Sports Park click here.
