Go Green or Go Home - It's All in the Name

Go green or go home, it’s all in the name. Area students put their environmental knowledge to the test.

The North Carolina Envirothon is an annual competition for high school and middle school students;  providing hands-on environmental and natural resource management education, while empowering them with the competencies and motivation vital to achieving and maintaining a natural balance between quality of life and the quality of the environment.

53 teams from 17 WNC counties participated in the Area 1 Envirothon on Friday, March 31st at the Haywood County Research Station. 14 teams represented Buncombe County schools, sponsored by Buncombe County Soil and Water Conservation District. They spent the morning studying five categories; soils/land use, aquatic ecology, wildlife, forestry and current environmental issues then put their knowledge to the test in the afternoon. The top seven scoring teams will compete at the NC Envirothon April 28-29. The top seven high school teams are Rosman HS Straight Outta Dirt, Brevard HS FFA Sr., Madison HS Environmentally FFA, Tuscola HS Avians, , Tuscola HS Dirty Doers, Swain HS Environmentally Aware-Wolves and North Buncombe HS Hellbenders. The top seven middle school teams are Madison MS Cacti Catz, Brevard MS Dig’n Deep, Cane Creek MS Veggie Ratz, Valley Springs MS Go Green or Go Home, Brevard MS Brown Dirt, Madison MS Sassy Scientists, Cane Creek MS The Acornz. Congratulations to all the teams.
