These are only the primary duties of a Buncombe
County Sheriff's Office communicator. Many times, the communicator
must play the role of an investigator, plumber, counselor,
electrician, etc. when corresponding with the citizens on
the other end of the telephone line.
- Typing/computer skills
- Verbal communicating
- Problem-solving
- Multi-tasking
- Memorization of the Ten Codes and other items
- Attendance to the Communications Class at the North Carolina
Justice Academy
Communications is in operation twenty-four hours a day, seven
days a week, including holidays and weekends. Each group of
communicators routinely rotates through the three different
shifts, so that a communicator works each shift at a given
point in time.
Day Shift 0700 to 1500 hours
Evening Shift 1500 to 2300 hours
Night Shift 2300 to 0700 hours
The communicators work hard and handle an abundance of stress.
