Death

Death Certificates of those who die in Buncombe County are on file in this office. The Death Certificates are sent to this office from the Health Department, and date back to the early 1900's. You may obtain copies of these records, either certified or uncertified copies.

If you wish to obtain a Certified Death Certificate, (one with a seal) we require you to complete our application form for a Vital Record according to G.S. 161.10. (Insert Application Form) This application requires your name, relation to the applicant, and your address. You may come to the office, or submit a written request by printing and filling out the form listed below.

N. C. Law allows us to issue Certified DEATH Certificates ONLY to the following:

  • Immediate family such as:
    • Your spouse
    • brother
    • sister
    • child
    • step child
    • grand child
    • your parent
    • step
    • or grand parent.
  • The law also allows anyone seeking information for legal determination of personal or property right or someone authorized as an agent, attorney, or legal representative of the person who's certificate is being requested.

We do not have any death records on-line.

  • Certified Death Certificates are $10.00 each
