Buncombe County’s Planning & Development Department recently held a quasi-judicial training day in coordination with UNC Chapel Hill School of Government’s David W. Owens. The continuing education opportunity brought members of elected and volunteer boards of the County, the six municipalities located within the County, the City of Marion, and local attorneys together under one roof. Local attorney Martin Moore noted “This was extremely helpful and was an excellent opportunity to learn from a truly exceptional educator.”
As the Planning Department has worked hard over the last two years to improve community engagement and make the development review process more accessible, planning staff felt it was also important to offer this training opportunity. The training covered many topics related to best practices for quasi-judicial hearings, legislative updates, and other associated comprehensive planning standards. Planning Director Nathan Pennington stated, “it was a truly collaborative effort.”
