Retrieving Flood from Buncombecounty.org for FEMA Floodplain
- Go to geographic information systems
- Go to access the GIS information system
- Complete the disclaimer agreement
- Map appears of county
- Go to search by blue button at top
- Search by pin, using no spaces between numbers and execute
- The selection results should pop up along with property map of parcel. If the map does not appear, then choose between the selection results for the desired parcel
- A layers column should appear to the right of the map. Click on FEMA Q3 1998 Flood Data, FEMA flood panel number, and aerial photographs, visible view
- The 100-year floodplain limits show up as either a gray shaded area with black borders (A zone), or an orange area with black borders, with diagonal lines in the center (AE zone). Zoom out if you cannot see this crossing the parcel until you see the floodplain on other parcels, just to verify that the data is appearing visibly on the map.
The map numbers for Buncombe County all begin 37021C0___C, dated May 6, 1996. If you need a map number, please click on FEMA flood panel number in the layers column. Zoom out. You will notice red grid lines appear across the map, with a two or three digit number near the center of each grid. If a three digit number appears, the FEMA map panel number for the parcel you are interested in would be 37021C0###C (insert the three digit number for the #s). If a two digit number appears, add a 0 and insert the two digit number, such as 37021C00##C.

If you do not intend to hire a surveyor or to go through a Map Determination Company for a flood hazard determination, the steps enumerated above should give you reasonable satisfaction as to whether or not the parcel you are interested in is within the 100-year floodplain.
