Description

Pack Memorial Library is the main library for Buncombe County Public Libraries. The administrative offices, support staff, and technical services operations for the system are located in this building.

Adult, young adult, and children's services are offered at Pack. Books, large print books, audio books, music tapes, CDs, videos and DVDs are available for check out. Internet access, word processing, and photocopy services are available. Because Pack Memorial is the main library, it contains the largest number of books, periodicals, and all other library materials for all ages.

The Sondley Reference Department provides research materials ranging from investment reports to literary criticism, consumer information to homework help. The North Carolina Collection features local history and genealogy resources, while the Thomas Wolfe Collection honors Asheville's favorite son.

Lord Auditorium, a 150-seat facility, is available for public use on a first-come basis during library hours. It contains A-V equipment, which must be reserved, and a one and one-half foot high, stationary platform for presentations. Seating can be re-arranged. Food and drink are not allowed inside the room and there is no kitchen facility. It is scheduled by calling 250-4711.

Directions

Pack Memorial Library is located at 67 Haywood Street in downtown Asheville. To get there, take Exit 4C (Haywood Street/Montford Avenue) off I-240. The library is on the corner of Haywood Street and Vanderbilt Place, near the Asheville Civic Center. You may park on the street or in the parking garage directly behind the building. To enter the library, either park on level 5 in the parking garage and use the connecting walkway directly from the garage; or park on level 4, exit the garage and follow the walkway to the entrance facing Vanderbilt Place.

Parking

Pack Memorial Library is attached to the City of Asheville's Civic Center Parking Garage. The Library entrance is located on the fifth level of the garage. During the week, free parking is available to all traffic for one hour between 10:00am and 7:00pm and 50 cents per hour after that. On Saturdays there is a $1.00 charge with no time restrictions. For the most convenient use of the parking deck on weekends, be prepared with the correct change.

However, please note that when the Civic Center is having a special event, parking costs $5 regardless of your destination. While the Library is a Buncombe County agency, the parking garage is maintained by the City of Asheville. Library staff has no jurisdiction over parking regulations. Please contact the City of Asheville with parking concerns.

Garage entrances are located on Vanderbilt Ave. and Rankin Ave. but all traffic must exit onto Rankin.
