Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention

While adolescent pregnancy rates in Buncombe County have decreased substantially over the past decade, adolescent pregnancy remains an important concern in our community. Buncombe County Health Center's Health Promotion Division works with many community partners, including Asheville City and Buncombe County Schools, and The Health Adventure (museum) to address this issue and offer a broad range of education programs for adolescents and their parents.

Growth and Development (5th Grade):

About the time they reach the 5th grade, our children begin the very important stage of development called puberty. There are many new things that are happening to their bodies, both on the outside and on the inside.

We think it is important that young adolescents have a clear understanding about these changes and to realize that these events happen to all boys and girls, but not at the same time. Health Promoters from the Health Center visit 5th grade classes in both Asheville City and Buncombe County schools to teach students about the normal changes that will be occurring. The presentation covers the emotional, social and physical changes of puberty and the need for more personal hygiene.

In order to create a comfortable environment for students to ask questions, boys and girls are separated into different classrooms for this program. Parents are welcome to attend the program with their child and to view the outline prior to the presentation.

Family Life Education (7 th and 8 th Grade):

Since 1991 the Asheville City and Buncombe County School Systems have offered seventh and eighth grade students a formal family life education program which includes human sexuality, making healthy choices in life and the benefits of sexual abstinence until marriage. Instructors for this program are Health Promoters from the Buncombe County Health Center and The Health Adventure. Approximately 93% of Buncombe County parents approve their child’s participation in this educational program each year.

The program follows the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction and Buncombe County Board of Education guidelines for teaching family life education. Classes include:

  • Information on the risks related to early sexual involvement
  • Coping skills
  • Assertive techniques to help students not become sexually active
  • Dating
  • Puberty
  • Reproductive anatomy and physiology
  • Sexually transmitted diseases

We acknowledge that parents are the best and primary educators of sexual matters for their children. We want to support your efforts, honor your wishes, and work with you to provide a quality program and the best outcome for your child. Please talk with your child as he or she participates in this program.

Students must provide written parent permission to participate in this program. Any parents who have questions are encouraged to contact Doug Jones, Health Promotion Coordinator for Buncombe County and Asheville City Schools, 255-5960.
