Buncombe County Board of Health
North Carolina voted into law an act that created Boards
of Health as early as 1877 "Act for the More Effectual
Preventing of the Spread of Contagious Distempers and to Establish
Boards of Health. Boards of Health are made up of key community
members. They are the advising and regulatory body for Health
Departments and still serve today without compensation.
Responsibilities:
The primary responsibilities of the Board of Health shall
be the policy-making, rule-making and adjudicatory body for
the Buncombe County Health Center (GS 130A-35 (a))
Composition:
The Board of Health shall consist of 11 members appointed
by the Board of Commissioners as provided by law.

Terms of Office:
Members of the Board of Health, except for the County Commissioner
representative, shall serve two terms of three years. No member
may serve more than two consecutive three-year terms except
under circumstances outlined by the General Statute. The County
Commissioner serves a term concurrent with his/her term of
office as Commissioner. (GS 130A-35.(c))
Vacancies:
Shall be filled for any unexpired portion of a term. (GS 130A-35
(d))
