Buncombe County Clinical Health and WIC Services Relocation to HHS Building at 40 Coxe Avenue

Buncombe County Clinical Health and WIC Services Relocation to HHS Building at 40 Coxe Avenue

What: Relocation of HHS Services
To better serve our community, Buncombe County Health and Human Services (BCHHS) will be moving more services together- under one roof.  Starting in mid-March, Public Health Clinical and WIC Nutrition services will be relocating to 40 Coxe Avenue in downtown Asheville.

Please note that there are two phases to this move. Clinical services will move first and will open in their new location at 40 Coxe Avenue on March 18th, 2019. WIC Nutrition (formerly at 7 Yorkshire) will open on March 25th in their new offices at 40 Coxe Avenue.

After March 25, ALL of these services will be at 40 Coxe Ave:

  • Breast & Cervical Cancer Control Program: cancer screenings & preventative health services
  • STD testing and treatment
  • Childcare subsidy: assistance with payments for childcare
  • TB testing and treatment
  • Food assistance (formerly SNAP)
  • WIC Nutrition Services: breastfeeding assistance, health screenings and nutrition education
  • Family Planning Clinic: pregnancy testing, birth control, referrals for vasectomies
  • Work First Services to assist with higher educational attainment and job training
  • Immunizations and foreign travel vaccines
  • Veterans Services: benefits assistance, healthcare navigation, and other resources for veterans
  • Medicaid / Medicare for individuals, children and families

Why:
Often times there are overlaps in the services that our community utilizes. This relocation brings Economic Services, Public Health, and Veteran Services back together in the same building which creates improved access to the full array of services that BCHHS provides. “We truly want to provide integrated services that promote and advance physical, economic and social health,” says Stoney Blevins, BCHHS Director.

Beyond increasing accessibility, the new location provides an upgrade to clinical facilities that provide immunizations, reproductive health services and breastfeeding assistance. “This move will definitely provide a more patient-centered clinic space,” says HHS Medical Director Dr. Jennifer Mullendore. “The new location will be more comfortable and efficient for patients and staff.”

When / How:
While the renovation of the main HHS Building at 40 Coxe Avenue was completed, Clinical Services was located at 53 S. French Broad Avenue. Starting March 18th, Clinical Services will open in the new location at 40 Coxe Avenue.

WIC Nutrition was located at 7 Yorkshire Street during the renovation. The main WIC office will now be open at the new location on March 25th.  WIC West will stay on Leicester Hwy.

Buncombe County has notified all clients affected by this transition. If you have questions, please call (828) 250-5000, visit our website at buncombecounty.org/hhs, or follow us on Facebook @bchhs for up-to-date information.

Parking:
Visitors to Buncombe County Health and Human Services can park for free in the new parking deck located at 11 Sears Alley. Handicapped accessible parking is available on every level. Each visitor will need to take a ticket at the garage entry. Visitors will bring that ticket inside during their visit and have it validated on their way out of the building. All visitors must park in the parking garage to receive free parking during their visit. Visitors parking in other lots or using street parking will not receive free parking and may get towed or ticketed.

Reception:
The Buncombe County Board of Commissioners, BCHHS Board, Buncombe County staff, community partners, elected leaders, the general public and media are invited to tour the South Wing on April 4, 2019 from 5:30 – 7pm. There will be time to connect with staff, attend a guided tour, and speak with some of our HHS clients. This will also be a photo opportunity for media. We look forward to seeing you there! Light refreshments will be provided.
