Nearly $100,000 has been granted to Buncombe County to ensure emergency food and shelter is available for our residents in need. These funds will be awarded through an application process, boosting the work of community partners to build a safer and healthier community. A local board of community organizations will determine how funds will be distributed among qualifying agencies.
Organizations interested in applying must meet the following qualifications:
be private, voluntary non-profits or units of government;
be eligible to receive Federal funds;
have an accounting system;
have demonstrated the capability to deliver emergency food and/or shelter programs; and
if they are a private voluntary organization, have a voluntary board.

These funds are made available through the Department of Homeland Security, Federal Emergency Management Agency under the Emergency Food and Shelter National Board Program. Buncombe County was selected by a National Board consisting of representatives from American Red Cross, Catholic Charities USA, National Council of Churches of Christ in the USA, The Jewish Federations of North America, The Salvation Army and United Way Worldwide.
Last year, Buncombe County distributed $101,180 in Emergency Food and Shelter funding through ABCCM, Children First Communities in Schools, Eblen Charities, Manna Food Bank, Meals on Wheels of Asheville and Buncombe County, Swannanoa Community Council, and The Salvation Army.
