General Statement of Duties
The Children’s Services Social Worker position provides the specialized services necessary to fulfill the legal mandate and ensure that children are safely maintained with their families and provided with sufficient minimum level of care and ensures that children who cannot safely remain at home receive timely reunification services and concurrent permanency planning as needed. The foremost responsibility of this position is the protection of the child. (#2665) 

Examples of Work
The Foster Care/Adoptions Social Worker provides direct services to children and their parents and other caretakers in response to instances of actual or suspected child neglect, abuse, or dependency; evaluates the safety and risk to the child; and takes appropriate action to protect the child, employing in the initial stages of intervention the permanency planning philosophy and employing the practice of concurrent planning to ensure safe and timely permanency for children who cannot safely remain at home and enter foster care. Position will perform duties as a representative of a public agency and is subject to high standards for personal and professional conduct. 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Thorough knowledge of social work principles, techniques and practices and their application to complex casework, group work, and community problems. Considerable knowledge of a wide range of medical behavioral and psychosocial problems and their treatment. Considerable knowledge of family and group dynamics and a range of intervention techniques. Considerable knowledge of governmental and private organizations and resources in the community. Considerable knowledge of the laws, regulations, and policies which govern the program. General knowledge of the methods and principles of casework supervision and training. In certain settings, considerable knowledge of medical terminology, disease processes and their treatment as they relate to decisions regarding clinical interventions and appropriate therapies based on medical or psychological diagnosis. Skill in establishing rapport with a client and in applying techniques of assessing psychosocial, behavioral, and psychological aspects of clients problems. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with members of caseload and their families as well as civic, legal, medical, social and religious organizations. Ability to express ideas clearly and concisely and to plan and execute work effectively; ability to efficiently and cordially interact with co-workers to accomplish common tasks; ability to efficiently and courteously interact with the employer’s customers, and the ability to function in highly stressful circumstances. 

Minimum Education and Experience
Master's degree from an accredited school of social work; or Bachelor's degree from an accredited school of social work and one year of social work or counseling experience; or Master's degree in a counseling field and one year of social work or counseling experience; or Four-year degree in a human service field and two years of social work or counseling experience; or Graduation from a four-year college and three years of experience in rehabilitation counseling, pastoral counseling, or related human service field providing experience in the techniques of casework, group work, or community organization, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
