We want you to know all you can about your government...

Here are answers to some of the questions we hear often. If you have any questions about your government that aren't answered somewhere on this website, please let us know. You can contact your County Commissioners by phone, e-mail or regular mail anytime.

What do the Commissioners do?

The Commissioners act as the governing body of the County. They are elected every four years and enact policies such as the establishment of the property tax rate and the adoption of the budget. They adopt ordinances or local laws that govern issues such as development, noise, animal control and the environment. If you want to know more about what they do, contact them personally by visiting "Meet the Commissioners" at the left.

When do they meet?

The Commissioners meet every first and third Tuesday of every month at 4:30 p.m. in Room 204 of the Courthouse in downtown Asheville.

Can I attend a meeting and speak?

All Commission meetings are open to the public and public comment is taken before every meeting. The pre-meetings begin at 4 p.m. and if you wish to comment, you must sign in prior to 4:10 p.m. You will be called on by the Chairman and given 3 minutes to make comments. Comments are taken prior to the regular meeting that begins at 4:30 p.m.

Are their meetings televised?

Yes, you can see every County Commission meeting (and much more) on the County Government Channel -- BCTV Channel 2 -- if you are a Charter Cable TV customer. Details about that channel line-up can be found on the left. If you are not a Charter Cable subscriber, you can watch the meetings on line with more details on the left.
