Buncombe County Health and Human Services (BCHHS) has been awarded $36,027 in State Set-Aside (SSA) Federal funds to supplement emergency food and shelter programs in Buncombe County. The funds were made available through the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) under the Emergency Food and Shelter National Board Program. Local jurisdictions qualify for these funds based on criteria such as population, unemployment, and poverty levels.
The purpose of the SSA Federal funds is to supplement and expand the ongoing work of local social service organizations, both non-profit and governmental, to provide shelter, food and supportive services to individuals and families who have economic emergencies. This funding improves the ability of BCHHS and community partners to advance health, safety and opportunity in our community by expanding capacity to provide food and shelter programs in high-need areas.
Public or private voluntary agencies interested in applying for Emergency Food and Shelter Program funds must do so by August 12, 2019.
Qualifying agencies must be located in Buncombe County. Under the terms of the grant, selected agencies must: 1) be private voluntary, non-profits or units of government, 2) be eligible to receive Federal funds, 3) have an accounting system, 4) practice nondiscrimination, 5) have demonstrated the capability to deliver emergency food and/or shelter programs, 6) if they are a private voluntary organization, have a voluntary board.
