Tony Nominated "Constellations" Coming to Asheville

In his award winning play Constellations, British playwright Nick Payne uses the quantum multiverse theory to transform the modern boy meets girl love story into a meditation about the big “what ifs” in life. The possibility that are multiple versions of the world we exist in is explored through the relationship of theoretical physicist Marianne and beekeeper Roland. Infinite possibilities lie within each moment: seemingly mundane choices launch Marianne and Roland into wholly different lives. The two meet and re-meet at a party, get engaged or marry other people, experience a love that lasts forever or one that is tragically cut short. As time and space bend around them, their story encompasses friendship and free will, love and multiverse theory—and honey.

Constellations opens on Friday, June 2, 2017; and runs Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays through June 18, 2017. Friday and Saturday performances are at 7:30 PM and Sundays are at 2:30 PM. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased online at www.ashevilletheatre.org, in-person at the ACT Box Office at 35 East Walnut Street, or by phone at (828) 254-1320.

The production is directed by Jason Williams and features local actors Melon Wedick and Jon Stockdale.

About the Play:

Constellations premiered at the Royal Court Theatre in January 2012, with Rafe Spall and Sally Hawkins in the lead roles and direction by Michael Longhurst.  The play received strong reviews from critics and subsequently transferred to the Duke of York's Theatre in the West End in November 2012. Charles Spencer of the Daily Telegraph commented that "Nick Payne's drama lasts just over an hour but packs in more than most shows manage in three times that length. It is playful, intelligent and bursting with ideas, but also achieves a powerful undertow of emotion" In November 2012 Constellations was named the winner of the best play category at the Evening Standard Theatre Awards, making the 29-year-old Payne the youngest winner of the award.

The play premiered on Broadway in a Manhattan Theatre Club production at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre on January 13, 2015 and closed on March 15, 2015. The cast starred Jake Gyllenhaal (in his Broadway debut) and Ruth Wilson. Ruth Wilson received a nomination for the 2015 Tony Award, Best Performance By a Leading Actress in a Play. The play received three Drama League Award nominations: Best Play, Best Actor, Gyllenhaal, and Best Actress, Wilson.
