More than 100 consumers have complained to us in the past month about calls pitching a medical alert system.
These robocalls (pre-recorded, automatically dialed calls) use what is called an avatar recording, meaning the recording can understand some of what you say and respond with a stock answer. In the recording, “John” promises you a medical alert system and says it’s already been paid for.
While this may sound like a good deal, we suspect it’s either a ruse to steal your money or to bill your health insurance provider for a device you may not want or need.
Consumers who’ve reported the calls to our office complain that they get them over and over, with some saying the repeated calls border on harassment. The calls tend to target seniors, and appear on caller ID as coming from 336-859-6217 or 919-659-5636.
It’s against state law for a business to call you using a recorded message, and our Consumer Protection Division is investigating the calls and attempting to find out who is behind them. If you get one of these calls, don’t respond to it. Instead, report it to us at 1-877-5-NO-SCAM toll-free within North Carolina, or file a consumer complaint online at ncdoj.gov.
