During April, Buncombe County is celebrating Smart Justice Initiatives. Throughout the month we'll highlight programs in our Criminal Justice System that exemplify “Smart Justice”.
Smart Justice Initiatives are programs and policies that create safer communities by addressing substance abuse and mental health needs of individuals involved in the Criminal Justice System. Research shows these programs to be more effective in reducing recidivism (repeated or habitual relapse), resulting in reduced criminal justice costs over time.
Look for fun and interesting facts on Buncombe County Twitter and Facebook. In the months to come our BCTV channel and YouTube page will feature videos about Smart Justice Initiatives in Buncombe County, including a firsthand look at what happens when someone becomes involved in the local Criminal Justice System. The month long celebration will culminate in a:
“Smart Justice” Fair
Saturday, April 20
10 a.m. – 12 p.m.
County Parking Lot #1 on Marjorie Street
beside the Buncombe Detention Center
The fair will provide an opportunity to meet Criminal Justice Officials and staff. There'll be loads of information about the various agencies as well as fun giveaways. Parents are encouraged to bring their young adults and visit the Sheriff’s Detention Prevention Trailer.
