Learn to Grow Fresh Veggies in Your Backyard

The Buncombe County Extension Master Gardeners (EMGs) will hold a one-day Spring Garden School on Saturday, April 6, at the NC Cooperative Extension Offices located at 94 Coxe Avenue. Garden School will offer the basics of vegetable gardening, primarily aimed at new gardeners or those who are new to gardening in the mountains. Garden School will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.Photo of tomatoes on a vine.

Topics to be covered include:

  • soil preparation
  • how to grow seedlings
  • cool weather plants
  • herbs and summer vegetables

Experienced EMGs will teach basic gardening methods and pest control procedures. Participants will also learn how to amend red clay soil, build and use raised beds, compost, and select a garden site. The merits of growing seedlings vs. purchasing plants will be discussed, along with pest and disease issues and vertical gardening.  Printed handouts will be available.

Space is limited! There is a $5 fee for attendance, and pre-payment is required for a guaranteed spot. Payment may be made in person or by mail to the NC Cooperative Extension Offices at 94 Coxe Avenue, Asheville, NC 28801. Make checks payable to BCMG Enhancement Fund.

Free parking is available for pre-registration and for the Garden School in the lot across the street (northwest corner of Coxe and Hilliard). Please note on check what program you are paying for.
