The Buncombe County Commissioners are proud to announce wireless access to the internet is available to you at no cost.
Buncombe County Government is now one of the few governments in North Carolina to offer free Internet access.
The access is available in front of the Buncombe County Courthouse in the City-County Plaza area 24 hours a day, seven days a week. You should be able to access the Internet if you can see the roof of the Courthouse.
You will not be able to access it if you are on the side or behind the Courthouse. In order to access it you must have a wireless Internet card. Wireless Internet cards come in 54 megabit (802.11 g) which cost somewhere in the neighborhood of $60 and a 11 megabit (802.11 b) which cost around $30. These cards can be purchased at local stores that carry computer products.
To access the wireless Internet from Buncombe County Government simply locate the available services offered through your wireless device on your computer. This will be listed as BCFreeweb1 and BCFreeweb2. Just click on one of these services.
If you are a first time user a box will appear asking for your name, email address and zip code. Your information will tell the Buncombe County Government who is using these services. You only have to register once.
This is part of the first phase in wireless Internet offered by Buncombe County Government. The second phase involves increasing the coverage area of downtown.
