General Statement of Duties
Performs technical work at the Public Safety Training Facility for Buncombe County.
An employee in this class provides technical services in the field of fire, law enforcement, rescue, emergency medical services and other programs as needed and works with agencies to coordinate training programs and services. This position assists in public safety training including supply and maintenance of equipment, buildings and grounds. Assignments are planned and executed with minimal supervision in conformance with established policies, best work practices, regulations and laws. Duties assigned to employees in the class may vary according to needs of the facility and allocation of workload. Tact, courtesy and firmness are required in dealing with employees, agency representatives and with the general public. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Public Safety Training Facility Manager and is reviewed through reports and conferences in terms of the effectiveness of the program.(#1502) 

Special Requirements
Possession of a valid North Carolina driver’s license. Possession of the following certificates issued by the State of North Carolina: Firefighter I, Firefighter II, NC EMT-B, Hazardous Materials Operation, Emergency Rescue Technician.
Flexible work hours, day, evening, weekends and as needed.
 

Examples of Work
Participate in supporting new and existing training programs.
Ensure that the facility remains in compliance with environmental and safety regulations per NC DEHNR, OSHA, EPA etc. Assist in regulatory audits and in any necessary corrective actions. Assist in the preventative maintenance of equipment to include checking the status and condition of equipment. Assists in preparing reports and maintaining a variety of records. Repair, replace, and adjust equipment and components to include rotating, aligning, and charging and discharging equipment. Perform maintenance and cleaning work for the upkeep of the apparatus, equipment, buildings and grounds.
 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
General knowledge of all local, state, and federal certification requirements for public safety programs. General knowledge of firefighting procedures, techniques and apparatus. General knowledge of emergency medical procedures and techniques. Skill in the use of computers and commitment to use of technology. Ability to interpret and carry out instructions and assignments. Ability to enforce safety rules, regulations and policies firmly, objectively, and tactfully. Ability to express ideas effectively orally and in writing. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments.  

Minimum Education and Experience
Graduation from high school, supplemented by required course work in emergency medical and firefighting techniques; or any equivalent combination of training and experience required to perform the essential functions.
