General Statement of Duties
Employee in this class performs public service work in the library. Work includes responding to patrons’ questions, circulating materials, programming for children and adults, and collection development tasks. Assignments require the application of a good knowledge of standard library methods and procedures and a familiarity with and interest in books and other reading and educational materials. (#1484) 

Examples of Work
Responds to a variety of reference and reader’s advisory questions in person or by telephone; instructs patrons in locating and using library materials; uses the library’s automated system to check out materials, maintain the collection, and assist the public in finding books and other items; assists the public in use of word processing, the Internet and other technology. Evaluates and selects materials to add to library collections. Reviews existing materials in assigned sections of the circulating collection and recommends materials to be discarded, replaced, repaired, or updated. Works as a member of the library’s Children’s Services team to plan and produce children’s programs at the branch library. 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Considerable knowledge of library techniques, systems, and working manuals. General knowledge of library routines and procedures. Working knowledge of standard sources for reader’s advisory and reference assistance. Working knowledge of children’s literature and the ability to plan and perform children’s programming. General knowledge of technology to be able to assist the public with the use of computers and other media devices. 

Minimum Education and Experience
Experience in library work. Graduation from a two-year college or technical school with major course work in library science or a relevant field; or an equivalent combination of experience and training. 

Additional Information
Position includes evening and Saturday hours, as assigned by the supervisor.
