Many Qualify for WIC, Do You?

 Buncombe County Health and Human Services wants to make sure infants and young children in our community get the nutrition they need for a strong start in life.  If a woman is pregnant or has a child under the age of five, North Carolina’s WIC (Women Infants and Children) program can help. This program is designed to support breastfeeding mothers, provide WIC Program offers food & nutrition services for pregnant women & children 5 years old & under.nutritional education and vouchers for healthy foods.  Research shows that a lack of good nutrition can put infants and young children at risk for health problems and problems in school.

It’s easy to apply for WIC. Busy caregivers only have to come into the office four times a year for services and to receive food vouchers. A family of four qualifies with an annual gross income of $44,123 and a single mom with one child qualifies with an annual gross income of $29,101. Additional income guidelines can be found here.

“There are many families in Buncombe County that may qualify for WIC services and don’t realize that they do,” says Georganna Cogburn, Nutrition Program Manager. “WIC is so much more than people realize. The nutrition education, breastfeeding support and healthy foods that WIC gives children a healthy start in life, which is so important.”

WIC currently serves around 5,387 participants in Buncombe County every month.

The Buncombe County WIC Program has trained staff that can assist moms in making informed decisions about what types of foods to feed their babies. They are available to answer questions specific to their child’s diet and eating habits. A variety of healthy food items are provided to pregnant mothers and young children who participate in the program including fruits, vegetables, whole grains, low-fat dairy and foods rich in protein.

Breastfeeding support is also an important part of the WIC Program. WIC staff are available to help teach moms the basics of breastfeeding and can assist with breastfeeding equipment if there are problems. In the event that a woman is unable to breastfeed, infant formula is provided.

WIC can help bring good choices within reach. Families that understand that healthy foods matter give kids a good start in life and create a healthier future for all of us.
